2024 WB Day 8 - State Line

We’d cross two state lines on our eighth day on the Mother Road, almost immediately out of Missouri, into Kansas and later Oklahoma.

Short but sweet and packing a punch, the 13.2 miles through Kansas is full of story. The movie Cars has certainly helped revive the old lead mining town of Galena…

…but so has Renae at Cars on the Road, where we find the inspiration for Tow Mater.

Around corner is Aaron at Gearhead Curios and his labor of love is on display.

Even the restroom has had plenty of thought go into it!

Past the last remaining bridge on Route 66…

…is Baxter Springs and Crazy Legs Dean.

The surprise on Allan’s face says it all, feet should just not do that!

Little remains of the very earliest road but this 9 feet wide strip conjured up thoughts of what it must have been like to drive and pass on coming vehicles back in the 1920s.

On the west side of Afton, remnants of a small motel, these days offering guests little more than star gazing and free flow air conditioning.

Lunch was special, well the venue was! Sonic burger where the food comes to you in the car…

or on the hood, your choice!

Oklahoma, is our fourth state… still with lush pastures and wide open stretches of road.

Chelsea is home to a mail order house… it arrived by rail!

The Blue Whale in Catoosa didn’t arrive by water but has been there since it was first used to lure kids (and their parents) to interrupt their journey on Route 66.

Skirting the edge of Tulsa…

…we land in Sapulpa, two stops, the first at Gearhead Curios…

Where Michael has his own twist on restrooms!

It’s a new road offering but one that embraces the spirit of old.

Nearby Bill and Tom show off the imposter, Chip Foose’s Riddler Award winning Impala.

Like everything on display at the Heart of R66 Museum, it’s eye watering and a favourite for at least one.

Di and Robyn have more modest tastes…

…but the Packard is a winner all round, the perfect pose before the final leg for the day.

That leg did swing in through tiny Depew with her oversized main street…

…her once thriving centre was the thoroughfare for the Mother Road between 1926 - 1928.

The Rock Cafe in Stroud - a feature of the Cars movie - is closed on Mondays so we would eat at Rubys…

with sleep at the Hampton Inn.
