The old road was like new in parts, running either side of the i44 leaving Cuba.

In places it stopped completely and we were forced to retreat but that’s all part of discovering just how much of the Mother Road still exists.

Discovering a tortoise on the road was a surprise for sure…

We relocated him to a safer place…

…and moved on past Stone Henge in Rolla.

Hooker Cut was the deepest man made cutting in the country in 1940…

and still allows the four lane dual carriage way access to the Big Piney River.

The disused Elbow Inn was the original Munger Moss sandwich shop before relocating to Lebanon and becoming the now famous motel.

The mural in Waynesville is a work of art, drawing attention to the small town…

…as does frog rock on the outskirts of town.

There’s an historical marker with a difference at Uranus…

But then everything’s a little different in a place with such a name!

En route to Marshfield a posse of rods and classics beat a path in the other direction, proof the old road still has plenty of purpose.

Edwin Hubble’s telescope is a hit in his home town…

but on this day it was the chance meeting with County Clark Stanley D Whitehurst, who opened up City Hall (on a Sunday) so we could use the rest rooms, and gave his time to explain how things work in small town America.

We ‘got basted’ in Nixa with ‘Burnt Ends’, the well done bits of a very slow cooked brisket.

Little surprise that picked up a few highlight votes for the day!

In Branson we saw Mt Rushmore, King Kong…

and a gigantic camera, in what is acknowledged as USA’s entertainment capital.

Some shopped, checked out the Titanic display… while others snuck into the huge Farm and Auto museum.

American friends Jane and Bobby joined us for dinner at the Uptown Cafe…

Until it was time to take a seat for the Legends in Concert show featuring Elvis, the Beatles and the Blues Brothers.

There was even a mosh pit for the die hard fans.
