2024 WB Day 10 - Don’t let the grass grow…

We remained in Texas on Day 10 but continued across the panhandle after saying our goodbyes to Hazel…

and the beautifully restored Conoco.

Contrasts in McLean catch our attention. The Philips Gas Station, restored and available for photo ops…

…while the abandoned motel at the other end of town tells a different story.

Just what, we’re not sure but the rooms with doors wide open,

left years ago, just as they were on the last day of business.

The towels still in place in the bathroom and toilet paper still on the roll. (Clearly the side effects of Covid didn’t hit this town!)

The real reason to visit McLean was Devil’s Rope Museum, the most unusual of all museums.

Today though it had an expanded with a very real ‘Barb’ Wire display. 😉

Manny checked out the very first pay-for-use toilet… but struggled to see how it operated.

On past Alanread and another resto gas station…

…past more of those power green generators that threaten to blight the horizon.

And now standing tall in Amarillo is the relocated Bug Ranch.

It’s no longer a spoof on Cadillac Ranch but a display in its own right. The artist Cesar was on hand to tell us how it will all look…

And we got to lay paint on an almost blank canvas, just days before the official opening, something that can never be repeated.

The Big Texan is nearby for lunch…

and unlike our Polish friends we met in Shamrock, we resisted the 72oz ‘free’ steak (if you can gobble it down in 60mins).

We walked around some the historic mile in old Amarillo…

Then checked out the boots and belts at Cavenders.

In Texas, where there are cowboy boots and hats, there will be Long Horn, and we found ours at the Sad Monkey…

where co-owner Michael, allowed us up close with these majestic animals.

Our accommodation was at Doves Rest…

on the edge of Palo Duro Canyon… a simply spectacular location with vista to match. Unlike the motel in McLean, we hadn’t let the grass grow under our feet on the tenth day of our journey across America.
