We filled up the night before, so no need to do anything more than snap a shot of the Texaco, leaving Tucumcari.

It was a short stint on the old road to Russell’s Truck Stop, another surprise for this crew.

Barbara & Emory Russell’s dedication to the truck stop is nothing short of spectacular, it’s more than a car collection.

The Texan border was the next exit at Glenrio,

…a two house stop straddled by both new and old corridors and it still turned this place into a ghost town.

The Panhandle is the shortest portion of Texas but still a wide open space, filled with wind turbines… how ‘natural it looks… not!

We reached the halfway point of our journey at Adrian… in miles anyway!

Ugly Crust Pie was the order at the Mid Point Cafe

With a grumpy old server who delighted in shouting from the roof tops and showing anyone the door who didn’t have patience! Another Route 66’ experience’ !!

More road, more power lines… and even more wind turbines…

…leads to a very special Texan ranch.

Cadillac Ranch!

They even make jewelry from the paint flakes!

Cavenders Boots - the store that specializes in everything cowboy (and girl!)

Bob’s grimace was at the sight of the price! Over NZ$1k for a cowboy hat.

In Amarillo, a mural begun this time last year has been completed, a graphic vision of the region and history.

We’re at Doves Rest for the night, overlooking the magnificent Palo Duro Canyon.

More on that tomorrow but a taste of things to come…

…a long horn beside the drive in. Bob was imagining it adorning his Mustang!
