We’d only been in the road 20mins when we had an unscheduled stop and called on the services of our resident mechanic Lindsay!

It didn’t hold proceedings up much and we still had time for a shake from Galaxy Diner in Flagstaff.

The other side of San Francisco Mountains - the highest point in Arizona - we stopped in at Twin Arrows.

Yep, only one arrow now, but that’s history for you… nothing lasts forever out here!

At Two Guns, the site where kids once begged their parents to stop and look at the Mountain
Lions.

We had lunch behind a wall protecting us from the wind. Once it was likely the diner anyway!

We drove through the corner in Winslow, checked out the flatbed Ford…

…before stopping at Jack Rabbit for a famous photo or two!

Lindsay and Mark chose rides to their personal preference!!

Further along the i40 past buildings that once served customers…

…on a road that no longer exists…

…was the Painted Desert. This year, greener than normal to contrast the pink hues.

Where the park road crosses the interstate is a reminder of the original road, marked with an Olds… and a line of poles marked the old route.

We learnt about petrified rock and got close up to prove we’d been there…

imagining the silica that once ran through the fallen trees to create what lay around us.

Back in Holbrook, there is only one form of accommodation, and it was booked for our group.

It would be welcome after a long day in the road… and perhaps a longer night next door at the Steakhouse!
