Soon after leaving, we find an old piece of our road running parallel to the interstate through Cajon Pass.

It leads to Victorville, home of the California R66 museum display.

The real meaning of the love bug will become evident as we move east, but for now it’s a great photo op.

On the loop road, the emerging desert is a natural home for an aircraft graveyard.

…and of course it’s home to Bottle Tree Ranch, another natural phenomenon in any desert!

Through Barstow, a town that is crossroads to the old road and new freeway, we begin to see signs of the past, some still in full swing, others struggling to stay alive in the searing heat.

Fresh paint on the emblem near Yermo is one of the few safe places to record the memory… top down long enough for a photo, then back under the roof and the cooling air con!

Peggy Sues is a very popular spot, right on R66 and the oldest diner in Ca.

Lindsay caught up with a long lost relo….

… we dined on curly fries and shakes!

They’re making good use of the sun in this part of the world… and the desert doesn’t look so parched right now, green hues influencing the landscape.

Our road leads deeper into that desert with triple digits registering in the dashboard in more than one place.

Clark Gable stayed at Pioneer Saloon for a couple of weeks, as have many actors over the years… his story a little more tragic than most. (Google that one if you’re interested!)

And then there was Vegas, the real deal, not the nicknames of our own cities we might find a little tacky.

Our birthday boy, Mark got a special ice cream desert… and it came with 13 spoons. Only in Vegas!
