Our Westbound team departed Chicago after breakfast at Robyn's Diner.

It was too early for Dell Rhea's historic diner in Willowbrook to be open ...

but the cleaners were preparing for a new day, so had a sneak peak inside.

Same story at the White Fence Farm in Romeoville.

Dick's on Route 66 was closed too but fortunately the mustangs have been faultless so far.

Joliet's Welcome Center was trading though, so this team checked out the town's steel and stone history, inside and out.

The saga at Wilmington continued with the Gemini Giant still dominated by the owner's clapped out Subaru. She was "...doing the Lord's work and I don't have time to talk" while painting the outside of her diner stop!

Raz contemplated the drive ahead at the Two Cell Jail in Gardiner...

...little did he know the history in nearby Dwight,

...home to the world's first drug and alcohol treatment facility with its own windmill for power and water...

and the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed bank.

It's also home to a Phil & Debbie Becker who again turned on the hospitality for our group with lunch...

and a close up inspection of some of the finest hot rods on the planet.

Just down the old road, alongside the i55 is Odell and a gas station still standing proud.

Then true signs of the past with half the old two lane blocked off, providing a snapshot of what once was.

Pontiac gobbled up a couple of hours checking out the region's war veterans...

...a few pontys of the past...

...and including one with a genuine 430 miles on the dial!

There was plenty about the old road too and of course we captured 'that' memorable shot so many before us have done.

We drove...

..then walked down memory lane in Towanda to understand the road ahead...

...before lining up Bloomington, our destination for the night.

Fortunately we'd gased up before stopping at Sprague's 'Super' Service... which we're sure it was back in the day.
