Our sixth day on the Mother Road confirmed the people are quite special and really bring the journey alive in a big way. Our first stop at the Bass Pro Shop in Springfield showed that things really are bigger in USA! They say this first store is the Grandaddy of them all... and they mean it.

We stopped at the 66 Cars Museum on the west side of Springfield for the first time and opened our minds more, with a personal display of unusual cars including rare British Austins and an American built Ford Brewster which looked more like a retro hotrod than a 1930's sedan. It was only sold in Rolls Royce dealerships of the day.

An interesting discovery was an Kiwi AA and Aussie RAC badge adorning an early left hand drive Morgan.

From cars to people - Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station where Barb was on hand to welcome us and explain everything her Dad did for Route 66 before he died in 2015.

It's one of those special places on Route 66 and Barb has done what she promised Gary... she and George are keeping the dream alive.

There as a photo op at Spencer with the old Gas Station neatly preserved amongst the trees and then we were off down the road.

We passed the location of the original Red Oak township and dropped in to see Red Oak II.

It's just where artist and sculpture Lowell Davis shifted / rebuilt / relocated it two decades ago. Lowell has a quick wit and that clearly comes through in his drawings, paintings and sculptures.

Lowell is an absolute delight, always happy to provide a classic natural pose for the camera and regale us with stories from his colourful past.

It made for a truly memorable day for our group as we slipped on in to Carthage to find Debbie waiting to welcome us like long lost friends to the Adobe style Boots Motel.

She even found time to join us at the Movies later that night after checking in her last guests.

We had cheese and wine (read club soda!) in style by the side of the road, waiting for the 66 Drive In to open and then dined trunk style as the sun set and we waited for 'The Secret Life of Pets 2 to begin...

...and that ended a long but satisfying day 6 on the Mother Road.
