Today we crossed from New Mexico, clear through Texas and into Oklahoma.

Leaving Tucumcari we stopped short of the border line at Russell's Truck stop and the impressive private collection of cars and other paraphernalia from decades ago, all beautifully presented in a well laid out display.

Just over the border is the Glenrio, a ghost town left in the wake of the interstate which ironically is almost as close physically as the old road herself...

...just far enough away, not to be accessible for modern day high speed travellers.

Brenda now runs the Midpoint Cafe and the pies are still to die for (we bought a couple for desert later in the evening) and we witnessed our halfway point in our journey along America's main street.

A treat was Bob Middleton's small ranch (is that a ranchlet?!) on the outskirts of Vega, where he now has more than just his solitary Longhorn steer with his metre long headgear. The cows are both expecting in a couple of weeks and we joked about the pain of such a birth process!

Next another ranch, this one with a difference - Cadillac Ranch, that icon in Amarillo that almost beggars belief.

Ten caddy's buried vertically in a paddock. Recent rains main access for art difficult but the Brown's took one for the team and waded in.

If it is Texas, then a real cowboy and cowgirl boot store was in order and we descended on Cavenders where some of the girls did serious damage to credit cards... mind you the surprise was Brian who now has very big boots to fill.

Lunch in Amarillo can only be at The Big Texan - steaks that were considered top notch.
Bug Ranch at Conway is one man's light hearted response to Cadillac Ranch... just five bugs buried to their screens.

We made Devils Rope museum in McLean but they closed early today much to the disappointment of the motorcycle visitors who arrived with plenty of time, so like us they snapped a shot outside and imagined the mass of barbed wire inside.

A quick stop for fuel (pumps were dry though) and then on to visit our dear friend Hazel at Conoco in Shamrock.

The state spent plenty restoring this old gas station to her former glory and it now serves as an info centre for modern day trippers.
Across the border in our fifth state - six if you sneak the stopover in Nevada is our home for the tenth night.

An old section of R66 nestles in the undergrowth and we found a small portion right along side the last stretch into Sayre.
A quick look at 'Cars' the movie revealed just where the inspiration came from and then it was lights out... earlier for some than most!
