We left Costa Mesa and headed north via the Pacific Highway along the coast back towards LA, via Huntington & Seal Beach and rejoined the 405 to The Petersen Auto Museum.

Not just a car collection but some real 'vehicle' history with dozens of movie vehicles like Batmobiles and a Back to the Future Delorean.

The Toyota minded amongst us (read current and past Toyota dealers) were negotiating to buy some of the visionary special vehicles on display!

There was even a virtual reality Batman and Robyn display!

Vernie, from Aussie found an old Caddy, just like he owned, possibly with a slightly different paint job though.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent in a combination of LA freeway traffic and local surface roads weaving in and out of several suburbs, as we made our way to the Aztec Hotel at Monrovia. It's still not open but the Elephant bar is from 3-11 daily but we were too early, so chatted to the Barbers, tenanted in the building (and their clients) who always seem pleased to have folk from down under drop in.

Just around the corner deep in suburbia we discovered an old disused gas station (Flying Service Station), proving there are still plenty of old attractions to find on the Mother Road.

Another period in traffic (we hope to soon leave behind us), found us slightly south of R66 in Riverside at a special night's accommodation after a quick top up for the pony's. These V8s seem to be much more thirsty than their four cylinder cousins, but none of this group is complaining!

Mind you I'm sure the gas station owners weren't worried either with the seven Mustangs filling their forecourt.

If you don't know about Mission Inn, Riverside, then Google it and find out. It's extra special in winter with its Christmas display with literally millions of lights adorning the huge structure, but still outstanding all year round with some stunning architecture from several periods.

Our king rooms are palatial and fit for a queen... and between that and some fine dining these travellers broke out the dresses and high heels!

A stroll around the top of the Mission Inn to walk off dessert was a must... it's been a long day, a little tiresome in the traffic at times but certainly well worth it judging by the 'Highlight of the Day' discussion over dinner!

Tomorrow we're slipping off Route 66 to the bright lights of Las Vegas, drinking in bars, showgirls and live performances ... and we're only talking about our guests!!
